*AmeriCorps VISTA- Dawson Community College

Of existing students at Dawson Community College, 86% received financial aid in 2017/18, with 66% eligible for the Pell grant. This indicates a high population of students who do attend DCC are in need of financial assistance to attend college. While there are programs in place that help directly with financial assistance for tuition or fees, there are not currently program in place that address non-academic needs of underrepresented students. This program focuses on increasing completion rates of economically disadvantaged students by 5% percent by developing sustainable programming for fundamental life skills, career exploration and readiness, along with hands on practical lessons for all students to ensure they possess the skills and competencies necessary for viable employability. Experiencing College Success program targets non-academic needs that can be barriers to students successfully completing their post-secondary education. The program goals include launching a food bank on campus to address food instability and teaching cooking classes to help students learn to live on their own. DCC would also like to offer a year-round housing program for students who do not have a place to go during breaks and providing workshops on financial literacy, job skills, and soft skills that allow students to be more successful in school and their future workplaces.
