SerVermont - Northeast Kingdom Community Action

Northeast Kingdom Community Action (NEKCA) is a leading organization in the NEK addressing poverty through education, community collaborations, and community action. We believe in each individual’s potential for positive growth and change. Community Action Agencies were founded in 1964 by President Johnson in the Economic Opportunity Act. In Johnson’s inaugural address he stated “In a land of great wealth, families must not live in hopeless poverty. In a land rich in harvest, children just must not go hungry. In a land of healing miracles, neighbors must not suffer and die untended. In a great land of learning and scholars, young people must be taught to read and write.” The idea behind the initial and present funding is to allow community needs to be evaluated at the local level. NEKCA conducts a comprehensive community needs assessment to determine how best to equip low-income citizens with the tools for becoming self-sufficient. NEKCA is able to locally allocate and spend federal dollars in order to offer specialized programming in the Northeast Kingdom. The mission of NEKCA is to empower all generations in the Northeast Kingdom to grow, prosper and thrive. Currently, NEKCA operates 10 Head Start programs throughout Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties. We have offices in St. Johnsbury, Newport, Canaan and Island Pond. Our services address issues of food insecurity, housing and homelessness, play groups, warmth, early education, parenting support, restorative justice, community re-integration, business development and employment training. Community action work is fluid, challenging and rewarding. Every day we continue to learn something new or meet someone who influences our work. Our work is valuable and important. As Nelson Mandela said "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest". The NEKCA family consists hard-working, dedicated community members who are passionate stewards of the Northeast Kingdom.
