Campus Compact VISTA - UMASS Dartmouth, MA
 
 
 
The UMASS Dartmouth VISTA will be housed in the Leduc Center for Civic Engagement, which helps students engage in service activities at local community-based organizations and schools through volunteering, tutoring/mentoring, or service-learning projects. The goal of the UMASS Dartmouth VISTA project is to continue building the capacity of UMass Dartmouth’s Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) project, a program focused on providing additional educational, social and emotional support needed to increase education outcomes within the low-income communities of Fall River and New Bedford. The VISTA member will increase VIPS capacity by developing a sustainable structure of volunteer recruitment and management to meet the needs of in-school and after school tutoring programs. The biweekly living allowance for this position is $613.48 in Bristol County, MA. In addition to the benefits listed, the host site will provide a fitness center pass. The AmeriCorps VISTA serving at UMASS Dartmouth will be part of a dynamic, motivated corps. Serving as a part of the Campus Compact VISTA corps provides VISTAs the chance to connect with corps members throughout multiple states, to create a network of support, and to share resources. Campus Compact supports the professional and personal growth of VISTA members through a variety of professional development opportunities and in-person trainings throughout their service year. Member Duties : The VISTA will be an integral part of the partnership with the New Bedford Public Schools to increase the capacity of programs and educational outcomes for low-income students in the New Bedford Public School System. Activities include: Strengthen and maintain relationships with partner schools and community-based organizations. Map and document existing programs within the partnership. Present key findings to stakeholders. Assess current programs for weaknesses and strengths. Research best practices and make recommendations for improvements, build capacity, and sustainability of current program. Develop and implement evaluations for programs and capacity building; data collection to measure capacity building progress. Develop outreach materials for volunteer recruitment and retention. Develop trainings for volunteers. Research funding opportunities to support programs. Communicate with various stakeholders on program. Coordinate and attend partnership meetings and special events.
