Town of Paonia Planning Coordinator
Paonia’s Vision is to be the center of creative opportunity of Colorado’s Western Slope where individuals, families and businesses thrive. The Town is committed to: 1) Honoring our heritage 2) Providing excellent services in a place where people choose to live 3) Promoting economic vitality and strategically positioning Paonia for the future. Promoting a steady local economy by supporting agriculture, energy, creative industries, health & wellness, recreation & tourism. 4) Honoring the independent spirit and freedom of expression of our citizens. 5) Preserving our beautiful landscape and water resources. Paonia is a statutory town governed by a Board of Trustees and managed by a Town Administrator and staff of 15-17. The Paonia Creative District is managed by the North Fork Valley Creative Coalition, a nonprofit creative industries’ membership organization. Paonia is a unique community of about 1500 people located on Colorado’s Western Slope along the North Fork of the Gunnison River and nestled between the Grand Mesa and the West Elk mountains. The area is a hotbed of organic orchards and farms, sustainably raised meats, value added products, organic hops and a truly remarkable wine industry. We have access to fantastic hiking, biking, fishing, hunting and skiing. The last Comprehensive Plan was done in the 1990s and the Town is long overdue to create and implement a plan that will serve this changing community. The area is transitioning from coal mining and traditional agriculture to a focus on organic orchards, vineyards and farms, a center for creative industries and a location for young entrepreneurs and retirees who want a non-urban quality of life. The Town must respond to this transition and provide infrastructure and services that meet the needs of all – newcomers and old timers alike. The Town also must create an environment which will attract and sustain small businesses.
