*MTCC Summer VISTA- Sunburst Unlimited

Sunburst Unlimited is located in Great Falls, Montana. Its mission is to educate and guide youth, organizations and communities in developing a sustainable local food source, highlighted by the Westside Orchard Garden. Summer Associates working with the Summer in the Garden Program will weekly mentor 160-200 underserved youth (k-7) in growing, eating, harvesting, preparing and serving their own fresh produce from their 2-acre garden on city park land. The Summer in the Garden Youth Program addresses 2 community needs: food insecurity and nutrition education. Poverty magnifies many factors for a family, including food insecurity and health. After rent and bills, there is sometimes little money left over for food, let alone nutritious food. As a result, the health of low-income families and children is negatively influenced and their risk for developing diabetes increased. The Summer Associates will work under the direction of the Westside Orchard Garden manager on garden program and operations: building, raised beds, composting, watering, mowing, irrigation, hosting guided tours and meeting monthly with Sunburst Board members. The Summer Associates will assist in developing their own garden curriculum kit on a topic of their choosing. Kits are intended to provide simple hands on activities for youth gardeners that reinforce concepts learned in the garden. Throughout the summer, youth are served healthy snacks (fruits, vegetables, yogurt) provided by the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank and Montana Food Bank Network. Each morning Summer Associates will coordinate transportation of snacks from the nearby Food Bank to the Westside Orchard Garden. Summer Associates will mentor youth gardeners in vegetable growing, composting, worm farming, preparing and serves healthy snacks and lunches. Summer Associates will help lead activities from garden curriculum kits on pollinators, composting, plant biology, nutrition and other STEM topics.
