Headwaters Alliance Engagement and Development Coordinator

Headwaters Alliance (HWA) is a mission-driven organization, born out of the community’s deep commitment to both honor the legacy of mining and reclaim those very sites from the harms caused by mining - it is an inclusive history. HWA mission is to cultivate a sustainable environmental and economic future for the Rio Grande Headwaters through community engagement, restoration, education, and innovation. Current projects include the ongoing revegetation of the Willow Creek floodplain, a 39ac site that was reclaimed from use as a tailings pile; flood mitigation; stewardship and volunteer programming; summer science camp for youth; and strategic action around water planning and water security in Mineral County. HWA is situated in Creede, CO - at a bend in the Rio Grande River, at 9000feet elevation in the southern San Juan Mountains. Summers bring an influx of tourists to enjoy the perfect weather, mountains, fishing, arts and theatre; while winters see the population considerable reduced to 800 folks in the entire county. Winters can also bring deep cold, deep snow and the most beautiful skies in Colorado. Creede boasts one grocery store, one gas station, several bars and restaurants and colorful residents. This position offers the opportunity to connect mission with action. The VISTA member will have the opportunity to help lift this community out of poverty and be a part of the team identifying and solving environmental issues, and then enable implementation through grant writing, fund-raising, public speaking and community organization. Because of the size of our community, our team and the scope of work, this position invites you to bring your heart, mission and interest into this important service work.
