Campus Compact VISTA - YWCA of New Britain, CT
The YWCA has a mission to "eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities." As part of this mission, the YWCA has collaborated with Central Connecticut State University, the City of New Britain, and other community partners to open the East Street Community Center, a site for comprehensive health, education, and career programming specifically targeting some of New Britain's lowest-income residents in and near New Britain's East Side. The second year VISTA Project continues to build capacity for K-12 programming that leads to improved educational outcomes and graduation for 100 vulnerable youth served through the Center. In its second year, the VISTA will continue building the Center's capacity to improve educational outcomes for local students. This will be achieved by 1) Identifying a school-community intervention model to be used by the YWCA 2) Developing a college preparation curriculum for students in grades 6-12 used at the Center and 3) Enhancing the tutoring and mentoring program piloted at the Center started in year one. The VISTA will receive a biweekly living allowance of $509.88 in Hartford County, CT. Benefits other than those listed include a fitness center pass, and conference attendance throughout the service year. The AmeriCorps VISTA serving at the YWCA of New Britain will be part of a dynamic, motivated corps. Serving as a part of the Campus Compact VISTA corps provides VISTAs the chance to connect with corps members throughout multiple states, to create a network of support, and to share resources. Campus Compact supports the professional and personal growth of VISTA members through a variety of professional development opportunities and in-person trainings throughout their service year.
