Campus Compact VISTA - Springfield College, MA
 
 
 
The VISTA will build and support a sustainable math and reading intervention program for youth in grades 3-5 at DeBerry Elementary School in Springfield, MA. The overall goal of the position is to work collaboratively with the Springfield College Education Department and teachers at DeBerry Elementary School to utilize college education majors participating in a required pre-practicum experience in their junior year as intervention specialists in reading and math. The VISTA will develop the capacity of both the elementary school and the college to create alignment between academic requirements of education majors and the pressing needs of the school. The first step in this process is to train a limited number of pre-practicum students to deliver interventions for youth in the core subject areas of math and reading to increase their academic performance, increase their engagement in academics and decrease the number of disciplinary issues. The biweekly living allowance for this position is $472.22. In addition to the benefits listed, the host site will provide the following: housing (on or off-campus), meal plan, fitness center pass, conference attendance, and other professional development opportunities. The AmeriCorps VISTA serving at Springfield College will be part of a dynamic, motivated corps. Member Duties : The VISTA placed at Springfield College will work with DeBerry teachers to identify existing intervention programs/strategies in reading and math that could be utilized with 3-5 graders. Work with Springfield College faculty in the education department to ensure that this program will fulfill the requirements needed to complete a pre-practicum experience. Support the Springfield College students in the practicum program. Assist with creating a training program for pre-practicum students to deliver the interventions and tracking mechanisms. Create a communication and regular meeting plan for stakeholders and facilitate meetings of the partners. Attend meetings, programs and events at DeBerry School to provide infomation. Leverage other Springfield College resources outward to the DeBerry School. Collect data and program evaluation and assessment.
