Harvest Against Hunger SA Community Action Center (Pullman)
The Summer Associate will be supporting Community Food Programs in the Palouse region to supply fresh, locally grown produce through the food pantry and harvest-share at the Community Action Center (CAC). This is a critical need in the community, where food insecurity is a documented chronic problem facing diverse populations (see The CAC’s harvest-share project includes hydroponics greens grown onsite, edible landscaping, community garden plots, gleaning at school gardens and farmers markets, and securing produce from local partnering organizations.

Member Duties : The Summer Associate will: • Help maintain the gardens including planting, weeding, and watering alongside other staff and volunteers. • Harvest weekly, alongside other procurement of produce activities such as gathering from partner organizations, to secure steady supply of produce for clients at the pantry. • Coordinate the harvest distribution. • Maintain a weekly farmstand at the food bank by setting up the communal space at the agency. • Record all harvest and donation records weekly and submit to CAC staff. • Coordinate with VISTA member to educate clients on recipes and cooking demonstrations with local produce. • Take any surplus to other distribution sites, sorting for past prime items, which will be donated to growers with livestock and/or compost systems.
