High school graduation rates among Native Americans lag behind their non-Native peers, hence there are even fewer youth applying for and attending college. Of the Native American youth that attend college, only 9% actually complete their undergraduate programs, compared to 19% nationally. Much of this disparity comes from a lack of preparedness for post-secondary education among Native American youth, but this is also an issue for rural youth in general. This project seeks to provide structure and guidance for these under-served youth to gain skill sets that can prepare them better to propel their lives in a positive trajectory after their completion of high school. To do this, a culture of educational engagement begins in those elementary age groups to establish the desire to learn more. This early intervention helps youth to develop better habits for success in education, furthering their ability to learn more effectively as they enter middle school. Successful educational strategies that become habits early can translate to higher successes in high school and beyond. As a program that serves all of these levels of education, we have the ability to develop the long term relationships with youth that follow them throughout their educational career.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps team member will help with summer programs. Summer programs are 10 weeks, typically Monday - Friday, 8AM - 6PM. There is the potential for some of the activities to occur in the evenings or overnight. The member will facilitate daily educational activities for at least 100 club members to minimize learning loss and engage youth in a love for learning in a non-traditional setting. Especially after the irregularity of the normal school year due to the impact of COVID-19, these associates will be a critical part of preparing students to return to school in the fall. The member will engage youth in reading clubs, age appropriate STEM activities, environmental science programs, and other forms for creative learning to foster positive traits and skills to succeed in school.
