*MTCC AmeriCorps Leader - Missoula Food Bank Empower Place
Missoula Food Bank and Community Center leads the movement to end hunger through advocacy, volunteerism and healthy food for all. We nourish community. EmPower Place is a collective impact effort housed at Missoula Food Bank & Community Center in partnership with spectrUM Discovery Area and Missoula Public Library. The 1,200 sq. ft. dedicated space functions as a "third place" that is part community center, science museum, meal site, and library. Rich with science exhibits, role models, literacy and STEM programming, and books for children, young adults, and parents, EmPower Place is designed to work upstream of the issue of hunger to enhance opportunity and quality of life for all of Missoula's children and families. In 2018, our food bank served 26,243 unduplicated individual in 7,897 households. 33% of our services benefit children; last year 8,747 children in Missoula County relied on Missoula Food Bank & Community Center for basic nutrition needs.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps leader will provide leadership in EmPower Place free after school programming. During the service term the leader will train and support volunteer engagement activities with youth. The leader will support youth's social/emotional development while attending the Food Bank. Activities for school-aged children in academic success will be led that tie to UM and Missoula College. Leaders will engage youth in curriculum that weaves multi-subject learning into play-based engagement. An example of this may be cooking classes with math and nutrition themes. Many of the activities that leaders do in EmPower Place pivot toward college positive messaging. The "M" in EmPower's logo is the University of Montana M, and the space is rich with "mentor signs" that tell the story of UM graduates in science and technology careers. The member will distribute and record snacks and meals in the space.
