2019 - 2020 Individual Donor Program Associate VISTA

Founded in 2003, the Northwest Side Housing Center's (NWSHC) mission is to identify and respond to the needs of the community by leveraging resources to improve the economic well-being and quality of life in Belmont Cragin and Surrounding communities. The NWSHC is a HUD-certified housing counseling agency that provides financial education and coaching as well as community organizing in the areas of affordable housing, education, youth, safety, and older adults. Belmont Cragin, a majority Latino community, on Chicago's NW Side, which is the primary community served by the NWSHC, has over 80,000 residents, and a poverty rate of 21.3%, which doubled from 11% from 2000 to 2010. The community is faced with poverty, high unemployment (11.5%), and high rate of cost-burdened families paying over a third of their incomes on housing. This VISTA project will increase the NWSHC's funding portfolio, specifically from individual donors, in order to increase our capacity to serve more residents. Primarily the VISTA will work on developing and implementing our Individual Donor Program, which will be an ongoing component of the NWSHC’s overall funding strategy. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website.
