2019 - 2020 Accessible Housing Educator VISTA

The Illinois Network of Centers for Independent Living is a network of organizations built by and for people with disabilities designed to help people achieve independent lives. Our project will educate these organizations and their stakeholders about accessible, affordable housing options, so they will be better able to help consumers. Housing continues to be a barrier for people with disabilities. This project is an attempt to break down that barrier and help people take a major step toward finding employment and breaking out of poverty. So if you would love to see more of this state, love to learn, and don’t mind speaking in front of small groups, this is the position for you. We are a very supportive group here at INCIL, and we will help you make sure you have what you need to succeed. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website.

Member Duties : The VISTA will spend at least the first two months with INCIL learning about accessible housing options, CILs, and some barrier that people with disabilities face. The VISTA will then work to develop an accessible housing specific curriculum with presentation and informational materials for the staff of CILs in Illinois, so that they will be better able to assist their consumers who are searching for housing. After the training is developed, the VISTA will then travel to CILs across Illinois to present it, first with another INCIL staff member, then alone. The VISTA will also be encouraged to keep a log or journal of the experience, so that they will not only have a record of the experience for themselves, but also so that they will be able to make a guide for future presenters of this curriculum.
