2019 – Dominican Literacy Center – Pathways to Employment

Detroit has an unemployment rate of 8.6%, more than double that of the state of Michigan and the country overall, and it is increasing. Dominican Literacy Center (DLC) offers Detroit residents GED preparation classes and works to provide employability skills that allow residents the ability to apply for better jobs or excel in the jobs they currently have. As a VISTA serving with DLC, you will help launch their "A Tutor for Every Student Program" by recruiting 120 volunteer tutors to meet the needs of DLC's learner population. You will accomplish this through multiple avenues: social media, print media, hosting publicity events, and more! Once recruited, you will help train and onboard tutors. Your service will affect the employment and high school credential rate positively in Detroit and will combat pervasive poverty by giving residents a way out through a better job.
