2019 – Alternatives for Girls – Pathways to Employment MNA

Young women in Detroit face extensive barriers to academic success and college preparedness. In 2015, only 43% of Detroit Public School female graduates attended college, as compared to 71% nationally. Many young women in Detroit are not fully prepared for college and lack crucial life skills which help them succeed there and beyond. As a VISTA serving with Alternatives for Girls (AFG), you will work directly with their Asset Building Program, which aims to provide disadvantaged and vulnerable youth with extensive support in reaching academic goals and a strong foundation of support on their pathway to college and careers. You will build relationships with colleges and college access organizations to recruit guest speakers and organize college tours for parents and students. You will also train and support AFG's mentors and help track educational progress with a report card tracking system. Your service with AFG will provide an excellent opportunity to make a profound impact on the lives' of young women in Detroit.
