SerVermont - Vermont Foodbank, SNAP Outreach

The mission of the Vermont Foodbank (VF) is to gather and share quality food & nurture partnerships so that no one in VT will go hungry. The VF’s strategic direction includes the following vision: everyone in VT has enough food every day; everyone in VT is healthy; & everyone in VT takes action to eliminate hunger & poverty. The VF works to further this vision through the following organizational goals: optimize organizational capacity; employ innovative solutions to food access; inspire & engage people to take action; and promote health through food & services. 1 in 4 people in Vermont access VF resources each year, either through one of our direct service programs, or through a local food shelf or meal site partner. The VF distributes 12 million lbs of food yearly through our network of 215 partner agencies statewide & through VF programs that distribute food directly to Vermonters. The VF’s SNAP outreach team works to spread awareness about 3SquaresVT (SNAP), & make 3SVT info & application assistance accessible to all people in VT. We recognize the importance of collaborative outreach & partnerships to strengthen 3SVT within Vermont, & advocacy to protect the program federally. Empathy is a core component to our approach. We engage in human-centered processes to make applying easier. Through storygathering & other processes, we aim to elevate the voices of people with lived experience of poverty & hunger, and break down stigma associated with food assistance. We employ innovative strategies that support equitable food access, acknowledge root causes of hunger, & consider lasting impact. We value collective wisdom and recognize the leadership potential in everyone. We prioritize & cultivate a culture of self-care in order to sustain ourselves and support one another. Safety is our top priority for those we serve, our co-workers, & families. We will continue to adapt our workplaces to respond to the changing demands of the pandemic.

Member Duties : SNAP (3SquaresVT (3SVT) in this state) plays a critical role ensuring every person in Vermont can access nourishing food. For every 1 meal in this country distributed by a foodbank, SNAP provides 9! The VISTA will join VF’s 3SVT outreach team; helping increase awareness & utilization of 3SVT. With a special focus on underserved populations & building partnerships in the southern half of VT. Outreach activities may include presentations, tabling, designing outreach materials, storygathering, and/or building/expanding other outreach initiatives. To increase efficiency & identify new outreach opportunities; the VISTA will evaluate internal workflows, reporting, and systems for the 3SVT outreach team & propose enhancements. Opportunities for cross-departmental collaboration and learning exist and VF engages all staff in trainings on diversity, equity, and inclusion regularly. This is a year 3 position and will build upon a foundation built from previous VISTA members.
