ACER-Affordable Housing Preservation Project (HOME Line)

The African Career Education and Resources, Inc. is a grassroots issue-based organization working to advance equity for Africans in the diaspora. Our Renter Organizing Project organizes tenants to advocate for themselves to be able to live in good quality affordable housing. We work with community members to develop strategies that will stabilize housing in our neighborhoods and communities. This is based on advancing tenants’ rights, preserving and increasing affordable housing, and addressing issues of displacement and gentrification. Our work is mostly based in the first ring suburbs of Hennepin County. This is a vast area. Our work has grown and so has our need to increase capacity. This area has experienced a huge population growth that is also very diverse. The two largest cities in this area of Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center are the only cities in Minnesota that have a majority people of color. The region has many aged apartment buildings housing many low wealth people that are in need of repair, and also at risk of being purchased and flipped into more expensive units that would result in displacement of low wealth community members. Our program provides a unique opportunity for the VISTA to learn and incorporate community engagement and organizing skills to identify and address community issues. We also work on engaging systems in order to transform them to serve impacted populations better to advance more equitable outcomes. The VISTA will have the opportunity to attend organizing training in addition to other trainings in communication and community engagement. The ideal candidate for the position is one who has a passion for serving the community and has a desire to learn and or gain experience in the housing arena. Having basic computer and office skills is required for this position. Being a fast learner and having the willingness to learn and stretch oneself will be needed to be successful in this position.
