Catholic Charities Outreach/Casework VISTA Summer Associate

Catholic Charities of Louisville is an apostolate of the Archdiocese of Louisville and member of Catholic Charities USA. We provide service for people in need, advocate for justice in social structures, and call the entire Church and other people of good will to do the same. Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) “welcomes the stranger” with open arms, helping those escaping persecution begin new lives with dignity. Our multi-lingual, multi-cultural staff offers comprehensive services to assist refugees, providing the necessary support to ensure successful resettlement and early self-sufficiency. MRS staff and volunteers begin assisting refugee clients before they even arrive, finding suitable housing stocked with food and furnishings. Upon arrival, refugees are assigned a case manager who can connect them with resources to find employment, enroll in school, learn English and acclimate to a new culture. Most clients become self-sufficient within four months. As a department of Catholic Charities of Louisville, MRS has been resettling refugees in the metro area since 1975. MRS operates as Kentucky’s official representative of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, one of nine U.S. agencies that has a cooperative agreement with the federal government to resettle refugees. The VISTA will work as a member of the Case Management team of MRS, which provides various services to clients such as assistance with housing, cultural orientations, material donations, medical and mental health case management, and more. The primary role of the VISTA will be to increase access to services for underserved immigrant populations, which have not been traditionally served by the MRS program.

Member Duties : Goals for the person in this position are focused in two areas: outreach and case management. Through this outreach and family-centered case management, clients will demonstrate improved self-sufficiency by meeting the goals and gaining knowledge through improved cultural orientation curriculum. The VISTA will improve cultural orientation curriculum by adding instruction regarding youth substance abuse prevention. This curriculum will be adaptable to various culture and language groups and be detailed enough to be taught by other staff in the future. Access to youth and family services for 30 underserved immigrants will also be increased through connecting with schools and faith communities, sharing flyers, and coordinating outreach events. Language skills (Spanish, Mam, K’iche’, Q’eqchi’, etc.) are a plus, though certainly not a requirement.
