Catholic Charities Refugee Youth VISTA Summer Associate

Catholic Charities of Louisville is an apostolate of the Archdiocese of Louisville and member of Catholic Charities USA. We provide service for people in need, advocate for justice in social structures, and call the entire Church and other people of good will to do the same. Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) “welcomes the stranger” with open arms, helping those escaping persecution begin new lives with dignity. Our multi-lingual, multi-cultural staff offers comprehensive services to assist refugees, providing the necessary support to ensure successful resettlement and early self-sufficiency. MRS staff and volunteers begin assisting refugee clients before they even arrive, finding suitable housing stocked with food and furnishings. Upon arrival, refugees are assigned a case manager who can connect them with resources to find employment, enroll in school, learn English and acclimate to a new culture. Most clients become self-sufficient within four months. As a department of Catholic Charities of Louisville, MRS has been resettling refugees in the metro area since 1975. MRS operates as Kentucky’s official representative of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops, one of nine U.S. agencies that has a cooperative agreement with the federal government to resettle refugees. Migration and Refugee Services serves all people equally regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, disability, political belief or sexual orientation. The VISTA will work as a member of the Youth Services team of MRS. The team provides school-related case management and donations, orientations for parents, assistance coordinating parent-teacher conferences, the New Horizons youth mentoring program, and educational summer programming centered around school readiness and English language acquisition. This is an engaging, cross-cultural opportunity for someone who is open to learning, hard-working, flexible, and who enjoys working with young people.

Member Duties : The summer VISTA in the youth program will focus on preventing summer learning loss and supporting youth substance abuse prevention through our refugee youth summer program and our New Horizons youth mentoring program. The VISTA will lead activities, organize field trips, conduct evaluations and develop a volunteer training manual for our summer program. The VISTA will also recruit at least 3 new mentors for the New Horizons program. It is hoped that at the end of the summer program, refugee students will be better equipped for the school year and learn how to make healthy choices. For both of these programs, the VISTA will assist with volunteer training and activity planning. Language skills (Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Spanish, etc.) are a plus, though certainly not a requirement.
