2019 Housing Navigator and Stabilization Specialist

We are a Community Action Agency serving Boone and Winnebago Counties. Engaging, educating and empowering people in poverty to build stronger communities through programs and partnerships. Our organization is a department of the city of Rockford and a Community Action Agency overseeing many poverty fighting programs. Census data shows, about 22% of our population lives in poverty. Point-in-Time data reports that 256 persons were homeless in January of 2018. Our homeless program has been running since 2015, but we do not have the staff to grow it in the way that is needed. A VISTA will allow us to increase the amount of landlord engagement, increase the number of people housed, and decrease length of time homeless, while reducing returns to homelessness. By using the Housing First model, we know that housing allows people to focus on other things such as education, employment and health, all of which can lift them out of poverty. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Member Duties : Create and maintain landlord database. Provide housing counseling, housing location and follow up services to homeless clients. Improve data procedures and collection processes.
