2019-2020 Housing Preservation Coordinator VISTA

The Center for Disability & Elder Law, Inc. (CDEL) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) legal services organization which provides pro bono legal services to the most vulnerable yet underrepresented residents of Cook County. CDEL’s mission is: (1) to provide quality pro bono legal services to low income seniors and people with disabilities and (2) to foster the pro bono culture throughout the Chicago area legal community. The Center for Disability & Elder Law (CDEL) provides free legal services to low income seniors and people with disabilities. CDEL’s clients, marginalized by age, disability and poverty, may have difficulty accessing the legal system. Paramount to this is housing stability. From the security of a stable apartment, to a senior lowering her real estate tax bill to stay in her house, to drafting Powers of Attorney for Property, to housing litigation CDEL has provided free legal services in housing law for 35 years. The VISTA Housing Preservation Coordinator will work with the staff/volunteers at CDEL coordinate CDEL’s housing-related legal services, helping low income seniors and people with disabilities live safer, more stable lives. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website.

Member Duties : Train on housing law, landlord/tenant law, powers of attorney, property transfers and litigation aspects of housing law (eviction and foreclosure). Coordinate the various community-based aspects of CDEL’s projects. This will include “prospecting” for new community partners, as well as scheduling and follow up on outreach presentations and workshops, attending the workshops to gain insight on the administration of the workshops and learn how seemingly simple tasks, like drafting a Power of Attorney for Property, can have a major impact on the lives of CDEL’s clients. Search for additional community partners. In addition, the VISTA will begin to review CDEL’s program to assess how it may operate more efficiently. Put into a place a sustainability plan for the continuation of the project with the goal of transitioning the project for future VISTA
