2019-2020 Community Engagement & Outreach Coordinator VISTA

To activate the potential of working families to revitalize their neighborhoods through savings, education & homeownership. The Neighbor Project (TNP) is a nonprofit, HUD-Certified Housing Counseling Agency dedicated to helping low-moderate income families reduce debt, build credit, save & ultimately buy their first homes. 15% of Aurorans are below the federal poverty level, but a disproportionate number also live just above that level. They have income, but not stability. They earn a living, but without assets like a home or savings account, they’re not financially secure. TNP Programs reduce working-class poverty by positioning working families to be the primary drivers of neighborhood revitalization by educating and preparing families to reduce debt and begin building wealth. This outreach position will expand this grass-roots community development strategy. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website.
