2019-2020 Housing Support Specialist VISTA

H.O.M.E. helps Chicago’s low-income older adults to live independent and socially engaged lives by providing intergenerational housing, home repair services, a shopping bus, moving assistance, and caring volunteers. H.O.M.E.’s 79 housing units include private apartments and, in our Good Life Senior Residences at Nathalie Salmon House (Rogers Park) and Pat Crowley House (Edgewater), family-style living with families and younger adults. The VISTA would fulfill H.O.M.E.’s original goal of bringing the neighborhood to the residents, not just the residents to the community. Socializing fights poverty. Working with and for residents, the VISTA would develop and document a process for systematizing and ensuring regularity of social programming. The VISTA would work with residents to organize regular activities, events, and programs for the residents of these buildings, resurrecting an essential function of H.O.M.E.’s shared living model. The VISTA would also fulfill one of the original H.O.M.E. goals of bringing the neighborhood community to our residents, and not just the residents to the community. In the process of conducting this outreach with and for residents, the VISTA would develop an internal manual that lays out a process for H.O.M.E. for systematizing and ensuring regularity of social programming, evaluating success, and that documents and describes external, trusted community program partners. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website.

Member Duties : Develop and implement an inclusive planning and delivery process for social programming for the residents of H.O.M.E.’s two intergenerational buildings, Nathalie Salmon House (NSH) and Pat Crowley House (PCH). These could include wellness and exercise programs, an educational speaker series on different topics of interest, arts programs, and book or movie groups. Create an internal how-to manual for H.O.M.E. that can be shared externally as a model for other affordable housing developers and service providers, on all the ways in which H.O.M.E. fosters intergenerational interaction within its buildings, and with the surrounding neighborhood. Develop a marketing approach for H.O.M.E. to community-based organizations: (1) in the Edgewater and Rogers Park neighborhoods; and (2) at least 9 community organizations spread out equitably through Chicago that serve a population diverse by race and religion, about H.O.M.E.’s programs.
