2019-2020 PADS Family Shelter VISTA

Public Action to Deliver Shelter, Inc. (PADS) dba Hesed House is dedicated to alleviating the plight of poor and homeless persons. For over 35 years, PADS has involved nearly 90 Fox Valley area churches, businesses and service organizations in providing a spectrum of care for homeless men, women and children. PADS is the largest shelter in Illinois outside the City of Chicago. Hesed House is a not-for-profit agency that serves the very poorest residents of the Aurora area. Guests must be homeless and include the unemployed, mentally ill, physically disabled (including persons with AIDS), victims of domestic violence, the chronically homeless, veterans, displaced families, senior citizens, emancipated teens, legal immigrants, alcohol and substance abusers and those experiencing homelessness due to severe economic duress. Every year our homeless shelters serve about 1,000 people with nowhere else to turn. Community relationships and funding allow us to continue our mission of providing immediate food and shelter for those in need and give us the ability to return them to independent living. This VISTA will expand our capacity for our new PADS Family Shelter by building on existing volunteer programs and developing new ones. These volunteer programs fight poverty by providing the food, shelter and basics necessary for our guests to escape survival mode and focus on accessing our resource center, to address the obstacles that led to homelessness. This position is a part of the Housing Action VISTA Network, which is an AmeriCorps VISTA program managed by Housing Action Illinois since 2010. As such, this position will receive expert training, support, guidance, and networking opportunities, in addition to the traditional opportunities for AmeriCorps VISTA positions. Learn more about the program at Housing Action’s website.
