College Health Corps, VISTA Leader 2019-20

The College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA program works to advance health and educational equity for the people of Minnesota by connecting higher education institutions with the community to create greater access to healthcare, culturally specific health and wellness resources, food and nutrition, and basic needs for underserved populations on college campuses and in communities. The CHC addresses both individual and social determinants of health through our array of sites, from clinics to community gardens, and community colleges to nonprofits. The VISTA Leader will have the opportunity to support projects focused on community gardens and food security, youth mental health access, American Indian health disparities, immigrant and refugee healthcare access, and partnerships to support underrepresented college students. This position supports a range of projects. Current sites include American Indian Cancer Foundation, Anoka-Ramsey Community College, St. Thomas Brightside Produce Distribution, Minneapolis Health Department, North Hennepin Community College, Northfield Union of Youth, Open Door Health Center, Rochester Community Schools, Normandale Community College, South Central College, Southwest Minnesota State University, University of Minnesota CHIP, University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy, and Wellshare International. The VISTA Leader supports VISTA members by providing coaching, organizing trainings, collecting data and stories about project outcomes, performing site visits, recruiting new VISTAs, and representing the program on the InterCorps Council and at other meetings. The CHC is an initiative of Minnesota Campus Compact, a nonprofit association of 37 2-year, 4-year, public and private, college and university presidents committed to civic and community engagement in higher education.
