Texas Parks & Wildlife Summer VISTA Lake Brownwood

Texas Parks & Wildlife Department's mission is to manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. Lake Brownwood State Park has many opportunities for these recreational activities and we hope to expand our audience in the local community, especially reaching the youth of our community that will be the future stewards of our park. This VISTA project will seek to provide increased access to the benefits of the outdoors to low income communities by developing and promoting outdoor learning opportunities and providing natural resource conservation career and volunteer training. Some of the specific project activities that a VISTA member will lead include, but are not limited to, fostering relationships with local organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club and Key club in Brownwood, attending outreach events in the local community such as Abilene Outdoor Adventures, and conducting outdoor educational programs at the park to encourage youth and their families to visit our park. This project expects to benefit over 200 low income youth and their families. The impact of this project is extraordinary, for both the community and for the VISTA’s skills, networking, and professional development. We are looking for a VISTA candidate who is self-driven, engaging and comfortable working with children, experienced public speaker, and culturally sensitive.
