United Way of Southwest Virginia IGNITE Development VISTA

United Way of Southwest Virginia fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in Southwest Virginia because they are the building blocks for a good quality of life. Through an initiative-based cradle-to-career approach, United Way of Southwest Virginia has shifted our focus from treating symptoms to addressing root causes – moving from being recognized as a fund raiser and distributor to an organization focused on bottom-line results: the lives that are changed and the communities that are shaped. United Way of Southwest Virginia creates sustainable solutions to address the challenges facing tomorrow’s workforce. We convene cross-sector partners to make an impact on the most complex problems in the heart of Appalachia. Through collaboration with government, business, nonprofit and individuals, we innovate for positive, lasting social change across a footprint that covers almost 17% of the state of Virginia: over 14 counties and 3 cities. United Way of Southwest Virginia is proud to employ dedicated, skilled professionals from a variety of backgrounds. We foster an inclusive, supportive, and fun work environment for all of our team members. This VISTA project will serve our Ignite program, which sparks career interest in the next generation of Southwest Virginia’s workforce through career awareness and hands-on learning. The program addresses poverty by bridging the gap between the worlds of learning and work by connecting schools and employers. With the Ignite program team, the VISTA member will grow relationships with 92 schools and 100+ businesses, building capacity with educational partners and employers to refine curriculum and credentialing, further develop internships, and create project-based learning and presentations to facilitate successful transitions from the classroom into high demand, high wage local careers.
