United Way of South Texas Economic Mobility VISTA

As an AmeriCorps VISTA, you have the power to make a big impact in the lives of others in our local community. VISTA will build the capacity and expand financial literacy programming as part of our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Your service at our location will give you experience in grant writing, communication between sponsors and partner agencies, teaching financial literacy, meeting clients’ needs, analysis of measurements and outcomes and more. You will be a vital part of increasing economic opportunity for low-income to moderate-income residents who seek VITA services. Low-income to moderate-income residents of Hidalgo and Starr counties in the Rio Grande Valley continue to leave thousands of dollars “on the table” each year due to their lack of understanding as to their eligibility for various tax credits and/or due to their financial inability to secure tax return preparation assistance from commercial vendors in the area. For eight years now, United Way of South Texas has led the development and coordination of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to ensure that every household earning $55,000 or less in Hidalgo and Starr Counties has access to free income tax preparation services and to a financial literacy session. United Way of South Texas culture is one of service, kindness, and resourcefulness. This is a great opportunity for someone to join a small collaborative, supportive team, working intelligently, individually, and diligently. A successful VISTA candidate is flexible, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and emotionally intelligent. As a result of VISTA’s efforts, United Way of South Texas will reach more VITA clients with financial literacy and increase the number of savings accounts opened, identify where service gaps are and what best practices can be adopted to enhance program impact, and find how to leverage United Way of South Texas resources to better achieve our goals.
