This summer, ShreveCorps members will work together toward the common goal of improving the quality of life for families in food deserts -- low-income neighborhoods where access to fresh foods is limited. ShreveCorps members will complete a minimum of 300 service hours this summer. Together, they will create, expand, and maintain community gardens at 20 food desert sites across Shreveport. There, they will grow food for families struggling with food-insecurity and distribute that food at no cost to the families. They will develop virtual content to help the recipients learn to prepare healthy meals and snacks and to teach children ages 7-11 how to eat healthy and grow their own food. No experience is required to be an excellent ShreveCorps member. The ideal ShreveCorps member will demonstrate a positive attitude, commitment to community service, and pride in their ShreveCorps and AmeriCorps membership! They will work as a member of a team with individuals from diverse backgrounds. They will communicate patiently, politely, and effectively with both adults and children and learn and progress toward becoming a self-sufficient gardener and community educator. This summer, ShreveCorps members will serve from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and half-days on Fridays for 10 weeks. ShreveCorps members earn a bi-weekly living allowance that totals to $2,175 for the summer and a scholarship of over $1,300 for tuition or student loans. No experience is required, just positive attitudes and a willingness to learn! To apply for ShreveCorps, please submit your application at Please contact Emilie Harmeyer with questions at
