South Dakota State University Extension works with local partners and community members to advance knowledge of and access to physical and financial health and wellness resources across the state of South Dakota. For this position, particular emphasis will be placed on bringing capacity to sustainable food systems tribal reservations.

Member Duties : AC VISTA member will work with South Dakota State University Extension to develop community-driven, culturally appropriate, and sustainable local foods programs for South Dakotans that can be piloted, evaluated, and sustained long after the VISTA member has completed their service. Specific activities include: create and adapt education materials to make them culturally appropriate to the Lakota culture; Help Non-Native partners intersecting with the project understand poverty; Document project progression for project sustainability, reports to prospective funders and for replicability on other reservations; Develop the capacity of three Tribal teaching incubator-hub farms on the Reservation; Develop workshop materials and curricula; Provide research and grant writing support to ensure project sustainability; Perform outreach to community members in need, particularly beginning Tribal farmers and those with disabilities wishing to participate in the tribal local foods program.
