VISTA Volunteer & Events Coordinator

Backyard Harvest works in partnership with our community to connect those with extra fresh produce and those that need it. We started as a gathering program over ten years ago and now engage volunteers to pick fruit from area trees, grow food & teach gardening skills in community gardens, and facilitate the use of SNAP benefits at local farmers markets. We deliver produce to food access sites that serve over 18,000 people across the four-county region of Asotin, Latah, Nez Perce, and Whitman counties. Our office is in Moscow, Idaho and the rural area we serve has some of the highest food insecurity rates in our states. This VISTA will help build long-term and fulfilling relationships with volunteers to convert them from occasional volunteers to committed, regular supporters. We need someone dedicated to building relationships at access sites such as the Latah Recovery Center, food pantries, and at our Shop the Market booth to help potential volunteers feel comfortable joining us for an event or opportunity. This VISTA will help build capacity for our Shop the Market program developing training materials and leveraging the program as an outlet for volunteer recruitment and additional avenue for impact. Lastly, this VISTA will help secure short-term funding for future volunteer coordination interns as well as volunteer acknowledgement and celebrations so that we can build connections among our volunteers and reward their efforts in a way that reflects their accomplishments and efforts. This is a great opportunity to learn more about food security and the local food system. The member will develop skills and experience in areas ranging from communications to food safety to grant writing. The position will start July 8, 2019 and end one year from the start of service. For more information contact Anne Zabala, director@backyardharvest.org or 208-669-2259.
