Alaska Maritime Workforce Development VISTA
 
 
 
Southwest Alaskan Municipal Conference (SWAMC) is the regional economic development organization representing Southwest Alaska. The VISTA project will focus on regional poverty alleviation through training and education. The Alaska Maritime Workforce Development plan was created to spur on economic development in Alaska.This project aims to build on previous efforts to ensure that low wage and unemployed workers receive the training that they need to progress along a career path that leads to more opportunity and job satisfaction. This project will focus on identifying and teaching skills that will help these members advance in the 21 century workplace.Examples of skills being taught are technological literacy, financial literacy, basic literacy, and effective communication skills. Throughout the year, the VISTA member will also be involved in the ongoing assesment of the program.

Member Duties : During the year of service the VISTA member will aid in the development of the Alaska Maritime Workforce Development Plan. This will be done through coundicting a gap based analysis on current programming. This is to ensure that the needs of the low income and unemployed workers are being addressed. From this analysis, the member will propose updates and will oversee the implementation of the program. Throughout the year, the VISTA member will evaluate the current programing to ensure its future sucess.
