Minnesota Youth Story Squad, University of MN (LitMN)

MN Youth Story Squad (MYSS) addresses educational opportunity gaps by working with middle school youth in Twin Cities public schools to amplify their voices through digital media making. We build partnerships with schools where the majority of students will be the first in their families to attend college. We offer a rich interdisciplinary, culturally relevant, social justice curriculum that uses storytelling to engage youth academically as well as socially. Our curriculum is led by UMN undergraduates, many who are first generation college students or students of color and plan to work in professional careers with youth, and our programming is always free. In this way, we’re truly a unique K-12/higher education partnership. After participating in MYSS: 81% of middle school students imagine college in their future; 78% believe they can succeed in school; and 68% better understand a path to college. The Literacy Leader will be an integral part of program expansion. The work will require a great deal of independence, but mentorship and collaboration will be ongoing in our work together. MYSS is housed in the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies at the UMN’s Twin Cities Campus. If you’re interested in higher education, you’ll find this a particularly good fit based on connections you’ll make and the experiences you’ll gain. If you’re interested in a career in K-12 education, you’ll have opportunities to build your networks. Having experience in Wordpress, digital media, social media, or grant making is a plus, but not required. What is required: dedication, energy, and passion in amplifying the voices and experiences of urban youth. Benefits: UMN parking pass or lightrail passes and library access. *Position is part of the Literacy Leadership Program of Literacy Minnesota; we foster an organizational culture that’s welcoming and inclusive to all. Member Duties : As a Literacy Leader, you will collaborate with a dedicated group of faculty, staff and students to: 1) develop and design content for our middle and high school programming, create systems for standardizing this content across schools, and evaluate our program content to ensure it is responsive to partner needs. You will receive hands on mentorship through this process; 2) develop partnerships with new Minneapolis and St. Paul schools. This will involve creating processes for ongoing collaboration and communication between community partners, developing and identifying appropriate partnership tracking systems, and developing a pipeline of UMN undergraduates to work with new K-12 students; 3) implement new marketing or fundraising strategies. This includes developing and implementing tools and processes related to outreach strategies; and 4) Recruit volunteer interns to work with us at all of our existing partner schools.
