University of Minnesota - MN Youth Story Squad (MLC)

MN Youth Story Squad (MYSS) addresses educational opportunity gaps by working with middle school youth in Twin Cities public schools to amplify their voices through digital media making. We grow and sustain partnerships with schools where the majority of students will be the first in their families to attend college. We offer a rich interdisciplinary, culturally relevant, social justice curriculum that uses storytelling to engage youth academically and socially. Our curriculum is led by UMN undergraduate mentors, the majority of whom are first generation college students and/or students of color and plan to work in careers with youth post-graduation. Because it is our mission to grow and sustain partnerships with under resourced, urban public schools, we never charge fees for any of our programming. In this way, we are truly a unique K-12/higher education partnership. After participating in our programming: 81% of middle school students imagine college in their future; 78% believe they can succeed in school; and 68% better understand a path to college. The Literacy Leader will be an integral part of our new expansion to Minneapolis public high schools. The work will require a great deal of independence, but mentorship and collaboration will be ongoing in our work together. MYSS is housed in the Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities Campus. If you are interested in higher education as well as pursuing additional education, you will find this a particularly good fit based on the connections you will make and the experiences you will gain. Likewise, if you are interested in a future career in K-12 education, you will have opportunities to build your networks. Having experience in Wordpress, digital media, social media, and/or grant making is a plus, but not required.
