Economic & Community Development Institute Summer Associate

Founded in 2004, the Economic and Community Development Institute (ECDI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit economic development organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio with satellite offices in Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and Cincinnati; and field operations in Toledo. ECDI is a certified Community Development Corporation (CDC) and a U.S. Treasury-designated Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). ECDI’s mission is to invest in people to create measurable and enduring social and economic change. As one of the top SBA microloan intermediaries in the United States, with a service footprint in all of Ohio’s 88 counties, ECDI fills a gap in the credit industry by offering loans ranging from $750 to $350,000 to underserved entrepreneurs. Its loan programs include culturally and linguistically appropriate financial literacy and microenterprise training, one-on-one technical assistance, and access to markets through business incubation. ECDI offers small loans and innovative technical assistance to systemically underserved entrepreneurs, focusing on low-to-moderate income individuals, women, minorities, and immigrants. ECDI’s Business Innovation Center (BIC) is the hub of training and technical assistance for ECDI. BIC incorporates the only SBA-funded Women’s Business Centers (WBCs) in Ohio—with locations in Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati—and the Food Fort, ECDI’s food incubator. ECDI also runs the Capital for Construction program, designed to remove obstacles that minority construction contractors face when expanding their business. Through its lending, technical assistance, and training services, ECDI helps underserved and underbanked entrepreneurs overcome systemic barriers to launch or expand their small businesses. ECDI has provided small business owners with over $53 million in startup or expansion capital, disbursed over 2,300 small business loans, served over 15,600 individuals, and created or retained over 8,800 jobs in the state of Ohio.
