PHENND Fellows - Nonprofit Track - Playworks

Playworks is the leading national nonprofit leveraging the power of play to transform children’s social and emotional health. Playworks currently serves more than 1,300 schools in 23 U.S. cities, and reaches more than 700,000 students directly and through professional training services. We are changing the school culture by leveraging the power of safe, fun, and healthy play at school every day. They create a place for every kid on the playground to feel included, be active, and build valuable social and emotional skills. Playworks partners with schools, districts, and afterschool programs to provide a service or mix of services including on-site coaches, professional training for school staff who support recess, and consultative partnerships. PHENND Fellows is a program that fosters young non-profit leaders who seek to expand the infrastructure for community partnership development across Philadelphia. Through its Nonprofit Track, it places passionate and talented college graduates at local non-profits as AmeriCorps VISTA members. This track has a three-fold mission: (1) Support local nonprofits fighting poverty across a wide range of issues, (2) Train and retain local talent to stay and work in Philadelphia, and (3) Develop the next generation of nonprofit leaders. During the 2019-2020 program year, 35 PHENND Fellows will actively build capacity in local organizations and participate in extensive professional development as a cohort. This program is run by PHENND (The Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development), a 30-year-old consortium of over 25 colleges and universities in the Greater Philadelphia region. The consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and promote civic responsibility through service learning among the region's higher education institutions. If you want to help build sustainable solutions in Philadelphia, please apply.

Member Duties : The PHENND Fellow VISTA will assist Playworks in its effort to scale programmatic and financial sustainability for its health play program across the School District of Philadelphia. The Fellow will help Playworks conduct a pilot to inform a larger district-wide implementation plan to bring the safe and healthy play to every school in the School District of Philadelphia. The Fellow will do this by 1) helping to build relationships with schools participating in pilot training; 2) evaluating participants’ experience in the pilot, and 3) working with School District of Philadelphia to encourage implementation of the learnings from the pilot. In the pilot, we will be creating and implementing a robust menu of training and consultative services that build the capacity of partner schools to continue Playworks’ healthy play methodologies independently.
