PHENND Fellows - Nonprofit Track - PLA Farmworkers Project

For more than 20 years, Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) has provided free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in Philadelphia. About 30% of the people in Philadelphia live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level. For those who are low-income, elderly, or disabled, our legal assistance is often crucial for them to protect their homes, their children, their safety, and their livelihood. PLA is dedicated to helping those who cannot afford legal counsel navigate the legal system, and understand and safeguard their rights. PHENND Fellows is a program that fosters young non-profit leaders who seek to expand the infrastructure for community partnership development across Philadelphia. Through its Nonprofit Track, it places passionate and talented college graduates at local non-profits as AmeriCorps VISTA members. This track has a three-fold mission: (1) Support local nonprofits fighting poverty across a wide range of issues, (2) Train and retain local talent to stay and work in Philadelphia, and (3) Develop the next generation of nonprofit leaders. During the 2019-2020 program year, 35 PHENND Fellows will actively build capacity in local organizations and participate in extensive professional development as a cohort. This program is run by PHENND (The Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development), a 30-year-old consortium of over 25 colleges and universities in the Greater Philadelphia region. The consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and promote civic responsibility through service learning among the region's higher education institutions. If you want to help build sustainable solutions in Philadelphia, please apply.

Member Duties : Through the Pennsylvania Farmworker Project, the VISTA will help increase the capacity of Philadelphia Legal Assistance to provide high-quality legal services to farmworkers across the state of Pennsylvania. By the end of their service year, they will create a documented network of social services agencies and other resources for farmworkers. They will identify key areas of PFP’s practice where they need to develop training to onboard new staff and begin creating a framework for that training. They will outline possible opportunities for sustainable funding and may complete some applications for grants. Finally, they will work with staff to streamline administrative and logistical tasks with technology. The PHENND Fellow’s work will allow PFP to aid more farmworker families in escaping abusive employment situations and building stability into their lives.
