PHENND Fellows - Nonprofit Track - PLA Farmworkers Project
Philadelphia Legal Assistance provides free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Farmworker Project, through legal assistance, education, and systemic advocacy helps empower immigrant farmworkers to advocate in the workplace and disrupt exploitative employer practices. Farmworkers are essential to the state’s $7.9 billion agricultural industry, yet they are uniquely targeted because of socioeconomic, linguistic, and geographic isolation. Due to the legal complexities that the farmworker community faces, PFP prioritizes a more holistic model of legal representation. PFP prioritizes clients’ individual goals, and works with clients to develop a solution that goes beyond pure legal outcomes. PHENND Fellows is a program that fosters young non-profit leaders who seek to expand the infrastructure for community partnership development across Philadelphia. Through its Nonprofit Track, it places passionate and talented college graduates at local non-profits as AmeriCorps VISTA members. This track has a three-fold mission: (1) Support local nonprofits fighting poverty across a wide range of issues, (2) Train and retain local talent to stay and work in Philadelphia, and (3) Develop the next generation of nonprofit leaders. During the 2020-2021 program year, 35 PHENND Fellows will actively build capacity in local organizations and participate in extensive professional development as a cohort. This program is run by PHENND (The Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development), a 30-year-old consortium of over 25 colleges and universities in the Greater Philadelphia region. The consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and promote civic responsibility through service learning among the region's higher education institutions. If you want to help build sustainable solutions in Philadelphia, please apply.

Member Duties : Through the Pennsylvania Farmworker Project, the VISTA will help increase the capacity of Philadelphia Legal Assistance to provide high-quality legal services to farmworkers across the state of Pennsylvania. The PHENND fellow will help increase PFP’s efficiency and effectiveness by establishing structures for outreach planning and expanding accessibility of outreach materials, strengthening our provider relationships and referral network, identifying new sustainable sources of funding, and developing an archive of quality training materials for new staff and volunteers. The PHENND Fellow will help construct and implement survey-based assessment of farmworkers needs. The year two PHENND Fellow will update the community education materials as needed. The PHENND Fellow’s work will allow PFP to aid more farmworker families in escaping abusive employment situations and building stability into their lives.
