PHENND Fellows - Nonprofit Track - Fiesta Schoolyards
PHENND (The Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development) is a 30-year-old consortium of over 25 colleges and universities in the Greater Philadelphia region. The consortium actively seeks to revitalize local communities and promote civic responsibility through service learning among the region's higher education institutions. PHENND designed the PHENND Fellow Non-profit track to place passionate and talented college graduates with local Philadelphia nonprofits as AmeriCorps VISTA members to support their anti-poverty efforts across a wide range of issues. If you want to help build sustainable solutions in Philadelphia, apply below. Newly established by the Lindy Foundation, Fiesta Schoolyards seeks to develop the full potential of a school play space in terms of academic, physical, and social-emotional enrichment. The non-profit plans to provide 100+ Philadelphia schools with a “smart, impactful transformation” changing regular, cold asphalt lots into bright, colorful multigenerational play spaces using the Fiesta Schoolyards design over the next decade. If you want to help build sustainable solutions in Philadelphia, please apply.

Member Duties : The PHENND VISTA will sustain the rollout of Fiesta Schoolyards to ten elementary schools in South Philadelphia and North Philadelphia, bringing fun, engaging play features to elementary schools that are currently surrounded by bleak, desolate, empty schoolyards. The VISTA will expand the reach of a new step-by-step Manual so that others can apply the Fiesta Schoolyard methodology to schools elsewhere in the nation. The VISTA will assist with the communications with multiple stakeholders; attend meetings with the school communities, nonprofit partners, City Council members, the School District; be involved in event planning for schoolyard launches; help to build support among Council members for funding from the City of Philadelphia; grow our social media presence on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and write a monthly newsletter. There will be an opportunity to research current standards of play theory to best represent Fiesta Schoolyards in this role.
