Stewards VISTA: Tribal Employment Program

This VISTA project is designed to help individuals from the Blackfeet Nation attain meaningful employment in Glacier National Park. Glacier Park will collaborate with park employees, community members, Blackfeet Community College Career Center, and Blackfeet Manpower to explore the barriers to employee, develop innovative solutions, develop materials and build relationships to better serve neighboring populations and to build pathways out of poverty. The Blackfeet had an expansive territory of most of Montana, up into Canada, and in 1896, a 20-mile strip of the Blackfeet Nation was “ceded”. This ceded strip became part of Glacier National Park in 1910. Once declared a national park, the government declared that no one would hunt or gather inside any of the national parks. Given this complicated history, the relationship between the park and the tribe has not always been positive. Through a four-year VISTA project focused on community engagement and environmental education, a new term position for cultural interpretation, and a park superintendent committed to a positive tribal relationship, the park has worked to improve its relationship with the Blackfeet and now has many strong partnerships with tribal organizations and members. The VISTA will serve as an employment ambassador for Glacier National Park. They will explore barriers to employment with the park from the perspectives of the employee and the employer, develop innovative solutions to address these barriers such as training and workshops, and compile their work into an accessible guide book for future reference. This three year project will address the issue of Glacier National Park not hiring many locals despite the Blackfeet Nations high unemployment rate and the fact that GNP is on ancestral Blackfeet lands.

Member Duties : The VISTA will explore barriers to employment with the Park from the perspective of potential applicants, community stakeholders, and Park supervisors. Innovative solutions to overcome these barriers will be identified and developed. The VISTA will develop materials and resources on employment opportunities and other topics related to career ladders including resume writing, navigating USAjobs, job interviewing, the application process, expectations for National Park Service positions, etc. Training and workshop opportunities will be developed to share these resources and empower local organizations to continue this training on their own into the future. Through this work, the VISTA will engage and serve alongside partners in the Blackfeet Community to continue to strengthen partnerships between the Blackfeet Community and Glacier National Park and identify barriers that exist for finding professional development and employment opportunities.
