VISTA LC Valley Coordinator

Backyard Harvest works in partnership with our community to connect those with extra fresh produce and those that need it. We started as a gathering program over ten years ago and now engage volunteers to pick fruit from area trees, grow food & teach gardening skills in community gardens, and facilitate the use of SNAP benefits at local farmers markets. We deliver produce to food access sites that serve over 18,000 people across the four-county region of Asotin, Latah, Nez Perce, and Whitman counties. Our office is in Moscow, Idaho and the rural area we serve has some of the highest food insecurity rates in our states. This role will focus on program development in the LC Valley. With unique produce and an extended growing season, we are excited to increase our operations and impact in the area. The VISTA will begin focusing on relationship-building, donor cultivation, and outreach to build visibility and knowledge of our programs in the area. This work will include meetings, grant writing, volunteer recruitment, development of materials, and leading volunteers in gleaning produce & distribution. The ideal candidate will: have excellent oral & written communication skills; be organized & punctual; be able to present in front of large groups and interact with diverse populations; be adaptable to changing circumstances; work as part of a team & independently, with minimal supervision, seeking help when needed, and taking initiative; have a valid driver’s license; be able to lift/carry 30 pounds and climb to demonstrate work on ladders; and perform job activities outdoors in varied weather. This is a great opportunity to learn more about food security and the local food system. The member will develop skills and experience in areas ranging from communications to food safety to grant writing. The position will start July 8, 2019 and end one year from the start of service. For more information contact Anne Zabala, director@backyardharvest.org or 208-669-2259.

Member Duties : The VISTA role will focus more broadly on our overall efforts in the LC Valley which includes Nez Perce county in Idaho and Asotin county in Washington. With unique produce and an extended growing season, we are excited to increase our operations and impact in the area. The VISTA will begin the deep dive of relationship-building, donor cultivation (both financial and produce), and outreach to build visibility and knowledge of our programs and services in the area. This work will include attending Chamber luncheons, meeting with potential business sponsors, volunteers, student groups, and other forms of direct outreach as well as grant writing, volunteer recruitment, and development of materials specific to the LC Valley audience. We have not previously engaged in much donor stewardship nor have we spent a significant amount of time developing the LC Valley program so there is a great deal of room for improvement.
