Albright College - CCNYPA

The Albright College and Northeast Middle School (NEMS) Partnership aims to increase academic skills and success for children attending Northeast Middle School. The AmeriCorps VISTA is responsible for the development and improvement of volunteer, tutoring and mentoring programs for Northeast students, drawing on resources provided by Albright College and other community members. Through increased mentoring, tutoring, parental involvement, and community engagement, which the VISTA will coordinate and the Partnership program will promote, we expect the academic achievement for at-risk middle school students to increase and that students involved in our programs will show growth in areas of need. 93.7% of students at Northeast Middle School are categorized as “economically disadvantaged”. The school is a Title I school and has over 20% students with special education needs but only 3.5% who are gifted; just under 22% are English Language Learners. Developing confidence and academic skills through enhanced programming, Northeast students will be better prepared to engage with learning and their community. During the 2019-20 school year, the Albright-Northeast volunteer will build on programs established in the first two years of the project and develop a plan for sustainability, with a focus on STEM-based educational initiatives. Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
