DeSales University - CCNYPA
 
 
 
The DeSales VISTA will provide vital support to the Allentown School District to improve academic achievement by educating, empowering, and inspiring children and families to have no more than five absences each year. The VISTA will develop DeSales University students to become Attendance Ambassadors with an elementary, middle, and high school. The VISTA and students will be dedicated to improving attendance. These positions are needed, since 1 in 4 Allentown students are chronically absent. Chronic absenteeism has been associated with lower reading and math skills in kindergarten students, and freshman year absences are as predictive of graduation rates as grade point average. Often the student personnel working on absenteeism, also have many other school responsibilities, and cannot always give attendance the focus and priority it deserves. The VISTA along with the Attendance Ambassadors will be able to devote each hour on how to support the school and improve student attendance. The VISTA will strengthen the partnership between the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley and our Allentown partner schools. The VISTA will design an Ambassador program that connects university students in meaningful and substantive ways with local community-schools. The VISTA will recruit students to help track attendance, identify causes on chronic absences, and help to create and implement a multi-tiered approach to address those causes; with the aim to reduce chronic absence. Additionally, the VISTA will work alongside each schools Attendance committee, and help develop educational material for families and children Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs (CCNYPA*VISTAs) are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.

Member Duties : The DeSales CCNYPA*VISTA will be part of developing the Attendance Ambassador program. The Attendance Ambassador mission is to educate, empower, and engage children and their families to understand the importance of attendance in conjunction with academic achievement. The VISTA will work within the University to recruit, hire, and train university attandence ambassadors. Collaborate with Roosevelt Elementray and Raub Middle, and Allen High schools to develop programming that improve attendance by educating and engaging children and families the importance of achieving five or less absences each year. Additionally, the VISTA will work alongside each schools Attendance committee, and help develop educational material for families and children.
