The America Reads*America Counts Study Buddies VISTA will work alongside Wilkes University Office of Civic Engagement to focus on increasing youth literacy and math skills by creating a mentoring and tutoring relationships between college students and youth in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District. This position focuses on educational skills building by pairing volunteer study buddies 1 on 1 in two schools and in the Wilkes-Barre YMCA after school program. The VISTA will build capacity by recruiting and training AR*AC study buddies for this program. These study buddies will serve as mentors to help children improve their academics as well as working on skills development, friendships and self-efficacy by provide quality tutoring and mentoring to enrich learning opportunities. This position represents a position with the Campus Compact of New York and Pennsylvania VISTAs. CCNYPA*VISTAs are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.

Member Duties : The VISTA will be responsible for: assisting Wilkes University identifying students eligible for federal work study to provide tutoring (study buddies); coordinating and hosting monthly meetings with project partners; assisting in planning and implementing tutor training alongside United Way staff; working to establish a self-sustaining program to expand program throughout new partner schools.
