'19-'20 Community Based Research Liaison VISTA

Our intervention focuses on meeting basic needs through what we identified as community strengths or protective factors. Our theory of change holds that by strengthening those protective factors including social connection, community resilience and increasing access to and utilization of quality resources we will be able to activate these populations of focus to continue to improve their collective mental health and wellbeing. Our intervention has documented that meeting basic needs alleviates poverty and improves mental health and wellbeing. The Community Based Research Liaison helps us analyze and measure our progress in being able to do this. The VISTA will be a member of United Way of Thurston County’s VISTA team, made up of 19 other VISTA members. The UWTC VISTA team is supported by the VISTA Leader, who coordinates professional development opportunities, provides individualized support and resources, and supports the program’s success.

Member Duties : The Community Based Research Liaison will build capacity for and support the Coalition Transition Committee to evaluate the impact of the intervention via the implementation of a follow up community based participatory research project, a follow up Social Network Analysis, and a follow up Community Resiliency Survey. The AmeriCorps member will build additional capacity by supporting the logistical needs and the fiscal sustainability of the coalition by bridging AmeriCorps training with grassroots programming meant to meet the workplan tied to the intervention. The VISTA member will use their training in the grants database to identify grants that we will apply for in the coming year to support the work of the Making Connections Initiative.
