Stewards VISTA: Greater Hazelton Rails to Trails
With the decline of Anthracite mining, prosperity within the Greater Hazleton Area has also declined. The VISTA with Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails (GHRT) will be primarily involved with the expansion of the GHRT under the new AML Pilot program. This includes turning the GHRT into an economic generator thru ecotourism. The VISTA will assist with the expansion through further grant writing, Master Site Plan development, social media, trail construction, elimination of abandoned mine land hazards, construction management, local outreach, and building local partnerships. GHRT provides the Greater Hazleton Area with an asset to better the community and get more people to stay in the area and prosper. GHRT is just one aspect of the Greater Hazleton Area Civic Partnership (GHACP). The VISTA will also work with the Civic Technical Scholarship Committee and partnering non-profit organizations. GHACP’s mission statement is to “make the Greater Hazleton Area the best place to live, learn, work, worship, and play.” Together with the Stewards VISTA’s help our non-profit organization can get closer to this goal.

Member Duties : The VISTA will promote GHRT in the local community to generate appreciation for the outdoors, with support of identified community volunteers who support restoration projects such as clearing overgrown right-or-ways and litter collection. Additionally, the VISTA will work to plan volunteer opportunities coinciding with Days of Service, through community presentations and public events and meetings. The VISTA promotes events through local media, websites, social media, and displays. The VISTA will apply for grants pertaining to trail development, in support of the Hike & Bike Event, the Town & Trail Race, the Walk with a Doctor walks, trail, operational/administrative support, trail maintenance and various trail improvements. The VISTA will review the current website needs and make updates as needed, helping to connect the website with social media, to increase outreach possibilities, and will work to ensure weekly posts on organizational website/social media outlets are generated.
