Stewards VISTA: Stream Team Action Management Project

Stream Team Action Management Project (STAMP) will educate kids and community volunteers about issues in their watersheds and provide the tools to implement positive actions to restore their watersheds. The overall focus will be to build capacity to increase environmental and watershed awareness and increase community engagement to empower Stream Teams/community members. Through these efforts, we hope to put in place a structure for positive actions directed at problems discovered in area watersheds. Improved waterways through local action will also improve health and education for the community, thereby reducing poverty. Our goal is to increase organizational capacity by creating systems including Stream Team education, training, and volunteer action while also improving volunteer communication/ organizational system. Volunteers are essential to grassroots community action and this project will help us focus on supporting our volunteers better! We also hope to expand our outreach to communities and schools to engage more volunteers in stream team actions by adopting their favorite sections of streams. We envision this outreach will be to a very wide segment of the population from schools to hikers to fisher folk, so not only those who need introduced to their waterways, but also those who love the water and only need a way to get involved. In addition, a focus on the increase youth training for students at high poverty schools will be pursued. While direct engagement of these students is meaningful, having older students who have graduated from these schools as leaders will be an incredibly effective way to empower young people. We will create a Youth Environmental Leadership Organization (YELO) to engage older youth to be the leaders of environmental actions by the younger students. We expect this increased awareness will create momentum in funding through grants, sponsorships and events to support STEAM and YELO.
