United Way of Indian River County Financial Stability VISTA

The recent United Way ALICE Report provides a holistic snapshot of financial insecurity at the state, county and municipal level. Population identified in the report as ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) are community members who are employed, yet can’t keep up with the rising cost of living. ALICE families earn above the Federal Poverty Level and struggle to cover basic needs, including housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and necessary technology. Traditional poverty measures do not capture the magnitude of people who are struggling financially, that is where the ALICE Report steps in. In our county 51% of households struggle to meet the basic costs of living here. United Way’s approach to helping ALICE family’s needs to be short and long term. The only way to ensure that individuals are empowered to be successful in the future is to make sure they possess the skills and education to be financially resilient with a sustainable income and ultimately a quality education, good health and stable housing. As an AmeriCorps VISTA, you have the power to make a big impact in our community. You will build the capacity and expand programming in the Financial Stability Impact area to increase economic opportunity for low-income residents. United Way of Indian River County’s employee culture is one of service, kindness, and resourcefulness. This is an opportunity for someone to join a small collaborative, supportive team. A VISTA candidate is flexible, self-motivated, hard worker, and detail-oriented. As a result of VISTA efforts, United Way of Indian River County will better understand what combination of income services are currently available to the target community, where service gaps are, what best practices can be adopted to enhance program impact, and how to leverage local resources to better achieve our goals. Together we will transform the lives of the most vulnerable children and families in Indian River County.
