Northampton Community College - CCNYPA
Healthy Minds at Northampton Community College (NCC) seeks to improve awareness of and access to mental/behavioral health care by creating a means to better inform students, particularly those who are low-income, about resources available to them online, from campus counselors, and from their peers. This project seeks to minimize the strong link between mental illness and poverty by providing supports so that students may manage their mental/behavioral health, succeed in school, graduate, and secure employment that offers life- and family-sustaining wages. The VISTA will lead activities critical to minimizing the causation between poverty and mental/behavioral health. They will engage students in informative classroom and campus presentations and facilitate forums where community members share their experiences to encourage help-seeking behavior. The VISTA will recruit and train students to serve as peer advocates. They will engage community members with expertise or personal experience in mental/behavioral health to shape policies and programs that help students thrive. The VISTA will help create a database from student responses to the online mental/behavioral health assessment tool that will be used to prioritize counseling needs and inform website resources. Through Healthy Minds, the VISTA will grow service capacity that empowers individuals to emerge from poverty by providing information, support, and access to care so students may manage their mental/behavioral health, succeed in school, graduate, and secure life-sustaining employment.
