PHMC Opioid Task Force VISTA

As a public health institute serving Philadelphia and the Southeastern Pennsylvania region, PHMC’s Opioid Task Force is committed to both halting the opioid epidemic locally and nationally and preventing further substance use-related epidemics. This work is closely linked to un-met poverty related needs. Poverty, unemployment rates, and the employment-to-population ratio are highly correlated with the prevalence of prescription opioids and with substance use measures. On average, counties with worse economic prospects are more likely to have higher rates of opioid prescriptions, opioid-related hospitalizations, and drug overdose deaths. Opioid use has dire economic consequences for individuals, families, communities and municipalities. It is estimated that this epidemic has already cost the United States $270 Billion including crime, healthcare and lost wages. The VISTA member will work with PHMC’s Strategy Development Team to project manage the multiple workflows associated with the Opioid Taskforce. The person will serve as a hub of resources and information, providing communication to members of the taskforce that support effective workflows and outcomes. The VISTA will maintain a library of resources and share key information in weekly email blasts to membership as well as develop and maintain an inventory of external partnerships that support the work of the taskforce. The goal for the work of the VISTA will be to increase the capacity of the Opioid Taskforce through integration across PHMC and across external partnerships.
