College Health Corps, North Hennepin Community College

The mission statement of North Hennepin Community College reflects the central purpose of the institution: “Engaging students Changing Lives.” Our goal is to help students succeed in their academic, personal and professional endeavors. Data demonstrates that our growing population of underserved students are facing significant health and societal barriers to achieving these accomplishments. The percent of North Hennepin students identified as Pell eligible has increased from 23% in 2006 to approximately 45%. Students who are low-income face many barriers that impede or delay their academic success or time to completion. Providing health education for students and building awareness about resources helps them build resiliency and strength to achieve. NHCC recently opened two additional on-campus non-academic support services for students, the Health Clinic, and the Community Connections Resource Center. These services are free for students and connect them with resources in and around the Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn Center areas. The VISTA will be expected to conduct capacity building activities in the Resource Center, and assist NHCC in growing our community partnerships so that we can improve access to resources for those who are most affected by health and income disparities in Minnesota. ---This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program, operated by Minnesota Campus Compact. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, food, and basic needs through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. --- ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor . Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***
