College Health Corps, Macalester College

Macalester College is a residential liberal arts college in St. Paul, MN. The college mission of service to society and supporting diversity fuels the well-established Civic Engagement Center. Urban Roots is a longtime community partner with Macalester through their work on food related youth programming in a low-income community. Climate change affects low-income communities the hardest. However, low-income communities are often underrepresented in environmental and sustainability initiatives. We want to change that. This VISTA will start an “Environmental Health” cohort of initially 6 college students who commit to a year-long service effort with Urban Roots. This initiative will connect the dots between public health, environmental justice and poverty reduction. Our VISTA will work to address the issues of hunger and engage a new generation of college students to become empowered to work on equitable environmental health issues. The VISTA will be part of our larger Civic Engagement Center team and thus learn about civic engagement in higher education and community-based work at a nonprofit. The VISTA will have primary responsibility for the recruitment of a culturally diverse student cohort and creating an infrastructure for a dynamic program. ---This project is part of the College Health Corps (CHC) VISTA Program, operated by Minnesota Campus Compact. The CHC increases low-income individuals’ access to health care, health education, food, and basic needs through capacity building projects, including partnerships between higher education and community based organizations. Professional development focuses on health equity, the social determinants of health, and effective partnership development. --- ***Please also send cover letter and resume to supervisor . Interviews will occur on a rolling basis. Preference given to candidates who apply early.***
